The Cube

"The Cube", a massive, two-story high construction of display surfaces integrating the latest in user-interface technologies, many of which are not available in Australia at the current time. To go further, this combination of technologies for a dedicated public-good purpose will be the first implementation of integrated visualisation, modeling and simulation tools on a massive scale.

The Cube is essentially a multi-user graphical surface and display configured for a social setting. This introduces requirements for creating new kinds of user-interfaces and content experiences. Multi-user systems are not this big and complex and are generally set up for individuals interacting with each other through single computer connected by the internet rather than co-located on a single site.

The project team has selected large scale projection, multi-touch and new gesture interaction systems as the core technologies for The Cube. Users/visitors interact with content inside and outside The Cube. The outside provides massive visual, multi-touch, multi-user display surfaces. Inside, users can experiment with cutting-edge gesture based technologies.

The high-tech nature of this project can be serious distraction on the requirement to discover what kinds of content and experiences are most appropriate for display.
The vision for The Cube and associated facilities, is to create an ongoing enterprise to research, develop, install and maintain public programs, deliver exciting multi-media content and continue research in the science of visualisation and advanced user interfaces.
